Exposure guidelines

Guidelines: FAQ

What is safe?

The International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) sets the fundamental guidelines.

These guidelines are broad, and many countries modify the limits, making them stricter.

Limits are mainly based on short-term exposure (6 or 30-minute time average) and are frequency dependent.

There are no long-term exposure limits in Australia. Short-term limits are being applied for constant/long-term exposure at home and work. These may be too high, and cumulative effects need to be considered.

Our standards are set by ARPANSA, which follows the guidelines provided by the ICNIRP. The ARPANSA limits are based on instantaneous and timed average (6-minute) exposures. Are exposed to EMF for more than a 6-minute interval during your day?

The Building Biology Institute has provided guidelines that it recommends for households. A subset of these guidelines also includes EMF exposure for sleeping areas which provides much tighter exposure limits for constant exposure.
